Back 2 School Wreath

This Back 2 School Wreath was submitted by Malia from Yesterday On Tuesday!!! This is a cute decoration to get the kids (and you) excited about the end of summer. I love subliminal messages!

Hi Pals!

I had a lot of fun putting this Back To School Wreath together. It's very simple-- you can even do it while visiting with your friends Sookie Stackhouse and Don Draper (courtesy of TiVo). This is also a great way to clean out your stash of school themed scrap paper.

Supplies: 12 inch styrofoam wreath, straight pins, scrapbook paper, scissors, ruler or paper trimmer, small chalkboard ($1 at craft store), glue gun, stickers (optional), letter stickers or chalk, crepe paper, felt or cardstock heart

Wreath1

Step 1: Cut approximately thirty 4 x 4 inch squares. Double sided paper is best because we're making pinwheels.

Wreath 2
Step 2: Fold each square diagonally.

Wreath 3

Step 3: Fold it diagonally again

Wreath 4
Step 5: Unfold and cut 2/3 of the way in on the folds

Wreath 5
Step 6: Grab a pin and pierce a hole close to the point in every other point, then through the center.

Wreath 6

Step 7: Congrats! You made a pinwheel. Place your pinwheels in the styrofoam wreath-- sort of figuring out where you want your other pieces (A "We" piece, heart, and chalkboard)

Step 8: To make the little "We" sign, just trace a glass or mug (or a combination) on scrapbook paper or cardstock to make circles. Use letter stickers to handwrite "We". To make the crepe paper boarder, fold the paper every half inch or so, securing with a dab of glue from your glue gun. Then glue it on the back of your little sign.

Wreath 8
Step 9: Add your letter stickers or handwrite "school" in chalk on the mini chalkboard. Mess around with the placement of the pinwheels, "We" sign, heart and chalkboard till you like how it looks. Hot glue down the larger elements. Optional: Decorate chalkboard frame with stickers. Note: I put pinwheels on the inside of the wreath also.

Wreath 9
Step 10: Celebrate the fact you got a decor item done before the actual event

Guest Blogger - Craftify It - Beadboard Picture Key Holder

(Read to the bottom to enter a giveaway to win the supplies to make these.)

Hi! My name is Staci & I blog over at CRAFTIFY IT!

I am so glad that Michelle gave me the opportunity to guest post on Someday Crafts!

She probably doesn't even remember, but just over a year ago when I had been blogging for about 1 week, she featured a preschool craft I did with my students on her blog...the Yarn Spider!

Being brand new to the "Creative Blogging World", Michelle was one of the very 1st blogs I ever discovered & has been a FAVORITE of mine since!
She is always showing off great new ideas and I check in frequently for new inspiration!

Like I mentioned, my blog just reached my 1 year mark in the blogging world & I have LOVED every minute of it! I have met so many fun people & have been inspired by the creative talent that is out there!

I am married to my best friend & am a stay at home mom to 2 adorable little boys!

I also teach preschool out of my home & create Custom Clocks on the side.

Some of my favorite projects I have completed in the past year are :
-my Ugly Brick Planter turned into a beautiful entry table
-this simple and adorable ric rac rosette necklace
- painting our Roll Top Desk for our office
and I am always updating before & afters of our house, since we bought a fixer-upper in September 2009!

I hope you will stop by
Craftify It & say "HI" soon!

But for now, I have a little "How To"...
just for YOU!!!

(READ TO THE BOTTOM TO BE ENTERED IN A GIVEAWAY TO WIN THESE SUPPLIES!)

99% of the time I make something, I dig through my closets/garage/shed & find stuff that I already have.

That way I am not only saving myself time & money,
I'm also cleaning out my "junk" at the same time!

Win-Win!

So this week, I dug out some random $1 store frames my mom had given me awhile back,
grabbed a couple 12x12 pieces of beadboard (I use these to make clocks with)...

and these hangers, I had leftover from this project...

I decided I wanted a new "key holder" on this wall next to my kitchen & figured I could make something with the supplies I had...

Yes...sometimes I stick things up on the "n" for my husband to mail on his way to work &
that clutter below is EMBARRASSING.

Oh well, every girl needs a little humility, right?
1st:
I took the apart the frames & took the wood part outside for a coat of paint.

Spray paint would have been easiest, but I used the interior green paint that is on my kitchen walls, because I wanted it to match...

I also gave the beadboard and the hangers of coat of white Spray Paint...

While everything dried, I came indoors to try to avoid heat stroke from our lovely AZ heat

& pried off the doo-hicky on the back of the frames that makes the frames stand up
(I wanted to remove any excess bulk)

Once the beadboard is dry, add a little color to the creases.
Just use a foam brush and paint right into the cracks...

and then using a wet sponge, wipe off, leaving the paint in the cracks & a little tin of green to the rest of the board. (It doesn't have to be perfect!) Imperfections=Shabby

Now, my original plan was to include a picture...

but I almost skipped that all together, & stuck the hanger on the inside of the smaller frame.
Cute, huh?

I decided I need some pictures of my boys up, so I stuck with my 1st option
& went into Picasa, chose a picture...turned it to Sepia & clicked Print.

It lets you choose the size, so I chose 5x7, making sure I had 2 inches on the sides I could cut off.

I'm sure there is a way that I could have just printed it as a 5x5, but I'm not that knowledgeable with computers, so bear with me:) I printed my 5x7's...

and then used the glass from the frames as a template to cut them to size...

Cute little boys & perfect squares...

Sand down your hooks a bit
(the one on the left has been sanded)...

Next, I drilled the hooks onto the frames.
Do this BEFORE you put the glass back in or you might crack it!

THEN, put your frame back together, with glass & pictures...

Next up, the beadboard needs a little work.
Drill holes in the corners so you can hang with ribbon or material...

I dug out some green polka dotted material & didn't bother ironing it, as I knew I was just going to bunch it up...

Pull through the holes & tie a knot...

Almost done!

Measure where you want your smaller frame to hang & drill a screw into the beadboard...

Now hang your smaller frame on that screw & hang up on the wall!
I love how it ties in with my green & white kitchen now!

perfect spot for our keys...

And I LOVE looking at these pictures of my cute boys...

This project was REALLY simple!
I started & finished it during my son's nap time & using what I already had!

Don't have these supplies laying around, but would like to make one???
Guess what???
I have some extra supplies...
JUST FOR YOU!

Hope on over to Craftify It & say Hello!

If you are a follower, leave a comment & you will be entered to win these supplies!
Hope to see you soon...
Thanks again Michelle for letting me Guest Post Today!!

In case you have never been to Craftify It before, let me just tell you that it is an AWESOME BLOG! I seriously don't know why Staci doesn't have 1000 followers yet. Her projects are usually easy, inexpensive and darling and her home renovation rocks! Like these adorable frames, most of projects and ideas at Craftify It is similar in cuteness and easiness. (Is that a word?) Hop over to Craftify It and look around. Check out her lovely clocks too!

Stairs That Talk

I want stairs that "talk" like these. Wouldn't it be awesome for teenagers to read these phrases and others every day as they walk up and down the stairs? It would be a great reminder to me too! See some of the other phrases that were put on the stairs at JayDee Crafts.

Baby Carrier Cover

If you have a baby carrier and are tired of the boring fabric on it, spice it up with this tutorial from Made With Glue and Love. While this is a Baby Bjorn, I'm sure the tutorial could be used as a guide for other baby carriers too.
