Spray Paint Your Dead Plants To Give Them Life!

Here's one of the ideas I have!!!! Can you believe it?

In our front yard, we have this plant that gets leaves and these bloomy-tiny flowery things in the spring and through the summer. (I think the plant is called Sedum.) When fall comes, the leaves fall off and the bloomy things turn an ugly brown. The other day, I thought I should turn them a pretty color to cheer up the long, cold winter we have in Northern Utah. Notice the frost on the dead plant. It hasn't been above freezing for a few days now:(

I got out the cheap red spray paint we had on hand (I'd bought it at the dollar store a while back) and decided to go to work. With newspapers behind the blossoms to prevent the paint from going on the house, I went to work!!!

Here's the first coat of paint! Looks so much better than the dead, frosted rose bush!

After the second spray, the plant looks like it has red blossoms instead of brown! So much happier than drab and dead! Why did I wait until the end of January to do this?

Here is a picture turned sideways. I don't know why blogger did this!!! Notice the pop of red!!! I think this would look beautiful in pink or yellow or purple too!

Do you have any type of plants that you can spray paint this winter?

  9. Super cool idea! I'm probably to cheap to "waste" spray paint on something that will only last a couple of months, but it looks great! Good for you, anything to make our surroundings beautiful, right? :)

  18. Love the comments, too funny ppl! When I lived in florida, the lawn guy would spray paint the the brown spots in the grass, green. Turned out it was a common practice. ha!

  20. Now that is too funny, but actually it really added personality back to that plant. The sedum is probably saying, "it's about time". Ha ha.

  32. I haven't tried Touch n Tone yet. But I have used DesignMaster. Think Michael's still carries it. Years ago (30) when I was a florist, we didn't always get the colors we ordered so we'd break out the DesignMaster and spray away.
Glad you shared it for winter. Great idea!

  33. Seriously???? I almost spit my coffee out my nose when I read this. LOL! What a great idea. You could even bring them in and put them in a vase! My neighbors might really think I'm crazy if I'm painting a garden using my dead plants. I don't have any to paint :-( Do you think I could paint snow to look like flowers???

  34. I am loving all the funny comments on this one! I am laughing at all your reactions!!! I am crazy and my neighbors know it. They expect stunts like this from me:)

  35. Well I 'll be darned! You really can use spray paint for everything! Thanks for sharing!

  36. Yes! I saw a post once where another gal sprayed her dried hydrangeas. They looked good just like yours. That's funny that yours are outside!! Your neighbors will be trying to figure what kind of flowers those are you have blooming in the dead of winter! lol
Thanks for the inspiration and the smile.

  37. Although your dead plant looks very nice, I'm still hoping my poor plants will survive. We don't usually get a freeze, but we did this year and my plants were in pots. I could have put them in the garage, but I didn't because I assumed it wouldn't get that cold. It never had before. Now they all look sick, but when I scrape the stems they're still green so I'm hopeful. I guess when spring comes I can spray paint them if they don't start getting new growth. :)

  38. Now that is the most interesting tip I've seen in a long time...

  46. This is a great idea...I should have saved all the houseplants I've killed over the years and could have tried it on them! I have a "black" thumb when it comes to plants but maybe now i can change that to a red one.

  47. This is hilarious! I am totally going to do that. It's better than the fake plants that have faded that you see in people's window boxes. LOL! Thanks, very clever. Lisa~ www.livingmybestlifeii-lisa.blogspot.com

  49. I just had to laugh when I read this post. I just did the same thing to a 'dead' arborvitae evergreen bush in my yard. I had one on each side of the garage door & one just died. Have looked everywhere in town for another one to plant, but none of the nurseries have them (not even WalMart or Home Depot. Since I walk around with a can of spray paint in my hand most of the time anyway... :), I just got out the hunter green paint and now it looks like it's alive & healthy! (for awhile anyway). 55. I do the same thing with my hydrangeas every fall - The red blossoms look so nice against the snow for Christmas and Valentines day. I'll have to remember to leave some sedums up next year as I usually cut them down.

    Yours look great!
