Guest Blogger - While He Was Napping - Luggage Tag

Hi Everyone! I'm Krista and you can find me over at While He Was Napping.

In a nutshell, I'm a young, twenty-something Army wife and momma to a little boy. My Mr. Right is the love of my life and best friend. I'm a lucky girl like that. We have a super cute Little Monkey that keeps me incredibly busy and on my toes. He has more energy than I could even dream of. He is the inspiration behind the title of my blog, as I only seem to get things done when he's asleep.

I have always been a creative girl and can't remember the last time I didn't have some sort of project going on. I am a Jack Jane of all Trades. I like to try new things and have a nice stubborn streak, just ask the navigation bar on my blog...

While He Was Napping started out as a marketing tool for my Etsy shop, but has quickly become a collection of my domestic life. There's a little bit of everything:
crafts, recipes, freebies to print, cleaning and organizing ideas, fashion and beauty tips, blogging tutorials, giveaways, things for kids and ideas for date night. I'd love for you to come over and visit! Some of my most popular posts include:

For Father's Day, I made and wrote a tutorial on creating Daddy's Six Pack. It was a fun, easy and inexpensive gift that My Mr. Right loved. I personalized the label to make it extra special.

My tutorial on how to make your eyes stand out has been a big hit. Who doesn't like pretty peepers?! Come check out the ten tips for making your eyes always look their best, plus what eye shadow shades will compliment your eye color the most.

If you're ever in need of some quick and easy decor, check out my selection of FREE printables, among the most popular is my summer subway art. What could be easier than hitting print and framing? I have created a wide variety of printables in a variety of styles, among some of my most popular are my subway art pieces.

With Summer in full swing, I am loving all the great summer foods: watermelon, lemonade, cotton candy, kettle corn... and soft pretzels. We love to make our own. It's definitely cheaper than the $5 at the mall, water park or theme park and always worth the time.

Now, let's get to the fun part! Today, I have a fun (and easy) tutorial for you. It's a perfect summer time project. My Mr. Right travels a lot for work. As I was trying to come up with Father’s Day gifts, I tripped over a suitcase. Literally. After I muttered a few irritated words and ripped the airline tag off, an idea hit.

I don’t have a whole lot of extra cash rolling around right now, so a DIY was essential. It was relatively easy and they are sturdy (a lot sturdier than I thought they’d be).

Here’s the How:

1) Find a thick piece of cardboard. The thicker, the better Cut it down to the height you want your luggage tags and double the width. Measure your piece of cardboard and find the middle. Score the opposite side of the cardboard so you can fold it in half. Mark out the window for your address. I used a small box of matches to measure it.

2) Cut out the window and fold your tag on the score.

3) Measure a piece of scrapbook paper. Leave some extra around all the edges. Put glue on one side of the cardboard and lay it face down on the paper. Flip the cardboard over and fold the extra paper over the top and bottom and glue it down (see the photo). I used Tacky Glue. It worked really well, other than there was some added drying time and I had to wait before moving on.

4) In your window, cut an “X”. Fold the paper back and glue it down. If there is any extra at the top and bottom, trim it off so it won’t be visible when you fold your tag in half. Put a little dot of glue in each of the corners to help keep them from tearing.

5) Cut a piece of thick plastic a little larger than the window. Just re-purpose the packaging from one of your purchases. I used the plastic cover from a Costco battery package, it was perfect. Glue it down. When it’s dry, apply glue on the side of the tag with the window. LEAVE THE TOP UNGLUED! If you glue the top, you won’t be able to slide your address tag into the holder. Fold the tag in half onto the glue and let it dry well. I suggest putting it under a couple of heavy books (or your 5-inch thick box of scrapbook paper).

6) Fold the ends of the tag like you would a gift. Glue it down. Cut a slit in one end of your tags. Thread a coordinating ribbon through the slit. Your ribbon will need to be about 2.5 times as long as your tag. The thicker the ribbon, the better it will hold. Tie it in a knot and glue it a little to help it hold.

7) Write out your address and slide it in the top of your tag. That's it! You’re done and you have some super cute, one-of-a-kind luggage tags. Easy to spot at baggage claim and you'll know immediately that you grabbed the right bags.

If you are worried about the paper tearing, you can do a thin layer of modge podge over the top to seal it.

My Mr. Right saw these tags before Father's Day and so I asked him if he liked them. He was less than impressed. My Mr. Right is very particular about everything having a purpose and the “airline tags are good enough” apparently. Men. In any case, I enjoyed making them and have since made some more for Little Monkey and myself. It's a nice, easy way to tag your beach bag, diaper bag, stroller and many other items. If you're worried about privacy, attach them to a small zipper inside your bag.

I hope you'll come visit me, and maybe stay a while, at

Thanks for having me over, Michelle! Congratulations on your little one!

KRISTA, THANKS! What a great tutorial! This could also be used for a backpack tag for school! I'll have to make something like this for my daughter's backpack!

Pottery Barn(ish) Fabric Luminaries

Create a something you would see in a Pottery Barn catalog by adding some fabric to some dollar store glass jars to create gorgeous luminaries. I love how simple and yet stunning this idea is. You can see the easy details for this project at Sassy Style Redesign.

Guest Blogger Re-run - Bird Crafts - Plush Fabric Flowers

This is another guest blogger re-run from one of my first guests! I love this tutorial!

Hi everyone, I am Bird from the Blog

Bird's Party

I live in France with my husband, my two little cherubs (most of the time..), my dog and my sewing machine. We used to live in the England, but moved here nearly ten years ago to start a brand new life à la française! Since discovering the wonderful world of crafts, I am totally hooked and can honestly say that “I’d rather craft than bathe?!” (lol)

I started blogging last November and I’m loving that too! I love to chat and to write (as you’ll find from this post) but I also enjoy making new friends. So feel free to leave me looooads of comments!! :)

At Bird Crafts, I blog about sewing, DIY, home décor, party ideas, thrifty finds, tutorials and recipes - If it’s handmade, chances are I’ll post about it! So after reading this, don’t forget to pop over and have a snoop around!!

Here is a sneak peek at some of my stuff…

By Bird Crafts

Now to the reason I’m here: TUTORIAL TIME.

Today my friends, I am going to show you how to make these super cute

Flower Pots

They are very simple to make and so versatile. Think gift ideas, decorative items for your home, or a party table centre-piece!! If you make this or use it in a craft project, please don’t forget to link back to Bird Crafts!

At the end of the tutorial, you can visit my etsy shop, so keep reading…

What you’ll need:

  1. Patterned fabric for the flower petals. I’m using yellow gingham.

  2. White fabric for the flower centre.

  3. A small clay pot

  4. A 23 cm piece of dowel rod or bamboo

  5. Florist tape

  6. Fabric pen or pencil

  7. Needle and thread

  8. Scissors

  9. Floral sponge (oasis)

  10. Natural moss

  11. Synthetic or bamboo fibre

  12. Glue gun

How to do it:

A. The Flower Head

Using a saucer or round lid as a guide, draw and cut 5 circles from your patterned fabric. I used a 10cm diameter lid.

Draw and cut 2 more circles from the white fabric. Now you have 7 circles!

Do a running stitch around the edge of each circle as shown below

When you’ve gone all the way around, pull the thread slightly to get a small “pouch” and fill with the fibre.

Finish pulling the pouch closed and secure with a couple of stitches.

Repeat for all the other 6 circles.

Now to assemble the flower head. Starting with the petals (patterned fabric), stitch them side by side until you have all the 5 petal joined up.

Using your glue gun, now glue the flower centres (white balls) in the gaps to get the flower head you see above.

B. The Flower Stalk and Pot

Cover your rod or bamboo stick with the florist tape.

Stick your floral oasis into your clay pot and using the glue gun, glue the stalk in the centre.

Using the glue gun again (I just want to kiss the person who invented this!!) glue some moss to hide the floral oasis.

Finally, carefully pull apart a couple of petals on the flower head, apply some hot glue and secure it to the stalk.

Embellish the vase to your liking. I used ribbon and a fabric-covered button to match.

And there you have it, a cute little Flower Pot that would brighten up any window sill!!

If you don’t fancy making these yourself, I am selling them in my Etsy shop :) I also sell plush tulips.
Thanks again Michelle,

Well, Release Me Create took her old Tropicana containers and turned them into these gorgeous vases for to hold flowers and such! Take a Look At These Highlights!

Once again, there are too many great ways to spend time creating! It is so hard to choose creations to feature each week. Here are a few!

Make an easy and inexpensive headboard with the help of A Step In The Journey. This would look so cute in a beachy type bedroom (or really any type of bedroom.)

It is hard to find short sleeve, light weight cardigans for warm/hot weather. However, with this idea from Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries, a summer cardigan is totally doable. She made a cardigan from a t-shirt! Sweet! (It would look great even on someone who is NOT pregnant!)

I love all things bandana so these bandana shorts/pants tutorial stood out to me. I think the paisley bandanas would make adorable short/pants. See the tutorial at Ginger Snap Crafts.

This is one awesome bedroom for a little boy! I love ALL the details of the rooms! Check out everything about it at Life As We Know It.

Nap Time Crafters created this darling summer romper using a fitted bed sheet. No elastics. No casing! Save LOTS of time. Check out this tip because I think it is pure genius.

This pillow is rufflicious! Wouldn't that look great on a couch, bed or chair? See this ruffle pillow at Ameroonie Designs.

See more ideas at the Whatever Goes Wednesday party!
